After 50 years, the Stanley A. Milner Library will undergo a total transformation.  Revitalizing the Milner Library will include a children’s library more than three times the previous space, an additional 4,000 square feet of study and reading areas, over 2,500 square feet of added community meeting space, space for Indigenous ceremonies, a multi-story interactive digital simulation wall and more.  Renovations are planned to be completed in 2020, with Clark Builders acting as the General and Waiward Steel LP fabricating and erecting the structural steel.  This project is 620 Tons of Steel, connecting to the existing concrete skeleton, including an architecturally designed North Façade, Ramp Structure and modern Windows and Skylights.  Below is a rendering of the new design:

Waiward Steel, an Edmonton steel fabrication and industrial construction firm, recently celebrated an impressive milestone. It achieved 4 million working labour-hours without a lost-time incident (LTI). That is equal to 2,000 employees working 2,000 hours per year. Today Waiward Steel LP is proud to confirm 4 Million Hours Lost Time Injury Free.  Congratulations to the entire Waiward team for this significant achievement.

In summary we have the following:

  • Construction LTI Free hours are 2,160,562;
  • Fabrication LTI Free hours are 1,854,122; and,
  • Waiward LTI Free hours are 4,014,684.

This success reflects our strong safety culture and our dedication to achieving high standards of safety in the workplace.  We are constantly working on improving our safety standards and our goal of being an incident-free workplace.

Our Construction team has reached 2M man-hours LTI  (Lost Time Injury) Free.  Congratulations to our dedicated team on this impressive achievement!

The journey to this milestone began a few years back when the culture shifted on-site at Waiward.  Waiward created a competency program internally where we continually invest in our employees by providing the appropriate training and coaching on a daily basis. We do this to ensure everyone is successful within their position and with the tasks assigned to them. Proper training helps ensure that safety and quality are not compromised on any of our job sites. Planning and communication from the moment a bid for a job has been submitted, through to the site execution is a cornerstone to our success.

This major milestone was achieved by focusing on the development of our workforce and would not be possible without the ongoing dedication of our field staff to our competency program and our visions & values.

We visited NorQuest College today to partake in some of their Aboriginal Day Celebrations. One of the pieces that stood out the most to us was the Redress collection by Arsan Buffin. The photographs themselves are beautiful, however; they become breathtaking when you know the story behind them.

After competing for two weeks straight – Waiward finished up the 2016 Edmonton Corporate Challenge games with an overall first place win in our division. Corporate Challenge is a two week sport & recreation event with a focus on participation, sportsmanship, team building and fun! Corporate Challenge takes place over 16 days every spring. Venues throughout the city host 22 diverse sporting events including Orienteering, Eight Ball, Trivia and Golf. Desktop (1024x768)

Yesterday we pulled out the barbeques and started slinging burgers for a great cause. Employees raised $4,310, and Waiward matched all employee donations – bringing the BBQ total to $8,620! Which brings the current donation total for those affected by the Fort McMurray Fire to $29,310!

Waiward Steel LP has marked another milestone:  we have achieved 3,000,000 working man-hours Lost Time Incident (LTI) free.  Waiward Steel takes great pride in this significant achievement as it is exemplary of all of our team members; from the field and shop working force, all the way up to our senior management team.

We are proud to have created a workforce culture that is just as excited at this milestone achievement as we are. We are proud to have developed and maintained a skilled workforce throughout the entire company, that has been the contributing factor to our success.

The record of 3 million man hours LTI free spans from all of our sites and is inclusive of our fabrication, field construction, drafting and office staff.  This is an incredible achievement in both the steel and oil & gas industry.

In an industry known for its inherent risks, we thank all of our divisions for committing to the Waiward way of thinking and reminding ourselves that safety is our top priority.

As we continue to develop as a company, we look to continuously improve our safety standards along the journey to our next milestone of 4 million man-hours LTI free.

We are proud to announce that Waiward has been awarded the IMPACT Project of the Year award in the Fabrication category for the North West Redwater (NWR) Sturgeon Refinery project. IMPACT is a joint labor-management trust that brings union Ironworkers and signatory contractors together to increase market share across the United States and Canada. Waiward has been involved in the NWR Sturgeon Refinery project since 2014 – from upfront engineering all the way through assembly, we fabricated approximately 10,600 tonnes of steel and assembled 20 non-process modules for this phase of the project. Waiward completed the approximately 220,000 shop fabrication hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) Free. Congratulations to both the Waiward & NWR teams.

As of January 15th, Waiward has complied with the provisions of the Safety Codes Act, and is hereby authorized to perform work involving pressure vessels, boilers and pressure piping. This is part of Waiward’s initiative to diversify further its service offering. Congratulations to the Team!

The Waiward Steel team, supported by FAM Canada at the Suncor site were awarded the Fort Hills Safety Leadership Award for the third time in 2015. This is a great achievement for our hard working crew. Congratulations to the team at the Fort Hills OPP Site!

This past year our construction group worked over 1.2 Million hours – a record year and successfully hit 1 Million hours without a Lost Time Incident (LTI).  This, in addition to our 1 Million hours LTI free in our fabrication facility back in March; marks historic milestones for Waiward and something we are extremely proud of!

Today, still LTI free, we send out a BIG thank you to the entire #MyWaiward team!  Are You Ready?

For the third year in a row – a brave group of volunteers braved the Fort McMurray winter for 24 hours during the Centre for Hope’s Subzero challenge. This event raises money for the Centre’s programs and brings awareness of the difficulties faced by Fort McMurray’s homeless. Waiward was proud to support Gary and Melody for team Waiward at this year’s challenge.
